[NRL] Video ref robs Canterbury (Dragons v Bulldogs)

Rugby League refereeing is usually well ahead of Rugby Union.

  • They were first to have a video ref
  • They have game-enhancing interpretations of knock-ons and forward passes
  • They have sensible attitudes to foul play
  • They have objective attitudes to obstruction by dummy runners
  • … except in this game where the video ref’s interpretation was not aligned with the rest of the game.

Then, another refreshing aspect to the 13-a-side code’s adjudicating is the way their refereeing hierarchy react to these situations with calm and considered assessment rather than the toe-the-line, back-them-at-all-costs-even-when-they’re-wrong attitude of their Rugby Union counterparts.
