[French Top14 final] Matheu has a shocker in Final (Clermont v Perpignan)
Jean-Pierre Matheu made what could have been a critical (and crap) call on the 68min mark when Clermont were hard on attack, in possession at a ruck and he decided to penalise the team in possession for ‘bridging’.
It was very difficult to see where the infringement was. The penalised player clearly had possession of the ball and besides, there was no way that any Perpignan player was obstructed from playing the ball.
Then, 2 mins later Matheu seemed to miss a clear knock-on by Clermont.
Just as we were thinking that a certain degree of justice had been done, seeming to read our minds, English language commentator Andrew Merhtens made the astute observation that ‘while it may appear that 2 bad decisions seem to balance things up, some decisions are more significant than others’.
The earlier decision had effectively ended Clermont’s chances, handing Perpignan the Brennus Shield.
